Latino Literature Discussion (Online Event)

Latino Literature Discussion (Online Event) Online

Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with a lively literary discussion led by Professor Reina Barreto. She will lead the discussion based on the reading “The Ceiba” by Salvadoran-Nicaraguan poet Claribel Alegría. This poem is found both in English and Spanish in our Latino Literature database.

The poem is part of a poetry collection by Alegría titled Threshholds/Umbrales: Bilingual Poems published in 1996. Alegría’s poems in this collection are lyrical and hopeful and speak of her transformation as both an immigrant and a poet. Alegría is one of the most celebrated literary voices from Central America.

Professor Barreto teaches Spanish, Humanities, and Latin American history at NSU. She has a Ph.D. in Latin American literature.

Please read ahead to get the most out of the discussion.
