About the Event
All That Jazz features more than 20 black-and-white photographs taken by William P. Gottlieb of eminent jazz musicians and singers, such as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington. The exhibition also includes colorful photographic works by Pete Turner featured on vintage jazz album covers.
William P. Gottlieb (1917-2006) is renowned for his iconic photographs of prominent performers of American jazz during its golden age of the 1930s and 1940s. He worked as a writer/photographer for The Washington Post and Down Beat magazine. He also made filmstrips and wrote and illustrated several children books.
Pete Turner (1934-2017) was a pioneer of color photography for commercial projects. His photography was used on numerous album covers for musicians and singers, especially jazz performers such as John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie. He published three books: Peter Turner Photographs, Pete Turner African Journey and The Color of Jazz.
All That Jazz: Photography by William P. Gottlieb and Pete Turner is curated and organized by the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Sponsored by NSU’s Division of Public Relations & Marketing Communication.
