Discover Your Family History with Expert Support

We can help you with your genealogical research. Members of the Genealogical Society of Broward County (GSBC) will be on-site to assist you, answer your questions, and help you navigate the many tools available for uncovering your family’s story. It’s a welcoming space to share tips, troubleshoot challenges, and learn how to make the most of online and in library resources. During the Open Lab, you can:

• Search the Genealogy Collection through NovaCat and check out physical materials on the 4th floor.
• Access NSU databases that support genealogical research.
• Sign up for a free NSU Alvin Sherman Library Card—available to anyone who lives, works, or studies in Broward County. Choose a physical card or an e Card.

General Society of Mayflower Descendants

In 1620, a brave group of 102 men, women, and children sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in search of a better life. Forty-five of these passengers died in the harsh winter of 1620–21. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants was established in 1897 to pay homage to the Pilgrims. The Society estimates that there may be as many as 10 million living descendants in the United States and 35 million living descendants of the Mayflower worldwide.

The Florida Society was chartered in 1937. There are now 17 colonies throughout the state, including the John Alden Colony of Fort Lauderdale established in 1949. Today’s speakers are Colony Governor Linda Williams and Betsy Slagle, Recording Secretary and Scholarship Chair. They will present an overview of the Mayflower passengers and the Society, share some resources on how to identify lineage to a passenger, and explain the application process and what is considered valid evidence of lineage.
