About the Event

This presentation draws on dual expertise in psychological research and Indian classical dance for an illustrative lecture on identity development through the lens of Indian classical dance. It will include brief Bharatanatyam dance pieces to enhance and illustrate key concepts of identity formation and development.

Madhavi Menon, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) College of Psychology. She has been a faculty member at NSU since 2007 and teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in developmental psychology. Madhavi also mentors undergraduate students in her Social Development Research Lab, which focuses on the psychosocial development of emerging adults, with particular emphasis on identity development, self-esteem, self-concept, and relationships with parents and peers.

In addition to her academic work, Madhavi is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer, teacher, and choreographer, and presently serves as the Artistic Director of the Natya Marga School of Dance where she trains children and adults in Bharatanatyam. Madhavi received her training in Bharatanatyam from Padmashri Guru Smt. Geeta Chandran at Natya Vriksha in New Delhi, India. Madhavi has performed extensively in the United States and India. She is frequently invited to conduct workshops and lecture-demonstrations on Indian classical dance for diverse audiences. Madhavi has also served as an Indian classical dance judge for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
