On the Shoulders of Giants
NPR Throughline: From Jack Johnson to Wilma Rudolph to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf
Presented by Dr. Gary Gershman
Each week, the library will feature a video or radio interview (30 to 60 minutes in length) highlighting a specific African American athlete or athletes who played a pivotal role in breaking barriers and challenging societal norms in the United States. The program will examine the broader historical context through the lens of sports and will connect key moments in history with iconic athletes and events.
The first program in a series showcasing film and audio documentaries will feature an NPR broadcast highlighting the challenges to racism in American society by three prominent Black athletes: boxer Jack Johnson, track star Wilma Rudolph, and NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Each of these trailblazers defied societal norms, broke barriers, and, at times, faced significant consequences for their actions.
